Power analysis Tools 2008/02/13 17:48 Karma: 0

Hi ppl.. i'm new to Vlsi-world. I would like to know a software which will be suitable for calculating the power dissipation ( Should calculate static power, dynamic power) and even the delay for each and every individual transistors as well as for a group of transistors(sub- circuit). I'm doing my PG in Applied electronics and my project is concerned with power dissipation.

Hello Sophia,
There are tools available from synopsys and Cadence.
From Synopsys
PrimeTime - Gate level
Nanosim - Transistor Level

From Cadence
Voltage storm (Gate level and transistor level)

There is also a tool called Mach PA from Mentor. I dont know much about this.

check the following links
http://www.synopsys.com/products/solutions/galaxy/power/power.html?BAC-HP&Link=Product_Pulldwn_Home
http://www.cadence.com/products/digital_ic/voltagestorm/index.aspx

have fun with your design

With great power there must also come - great responsibility

Dear Sophia

I had at your post on power. I think there are tools from each of the major vendor Mentor, Cadence, Synopsys.

If you want to analyze switching power of Digital cells then any spice simulator in market like HSPICE should be able to do the job.

The point is that for transistor level simulations the models that you attach at the time of simulations (BSIM etc.) should have power data for calculation at the time of simulation. Otherwise they might take in the default value and simulate that are not realistic dissaped power by the circuit.

As for big block level power dissapation there must be data on dissapation of each small blocks in the modelled library. As for the tools go through the synopsys website as a start point. (Mentor and Cadence also have their own tools)

The exact power dissapation for chips i think is much more complicated estimation which includes the analog blocks as well.
