I have come across the term Fixed function hardware implementation of digital filters , does anybody know what this is?

Fixed function hardware - A circuit which you cannot change the functionality. Take any integrated circuit if it does not have facility to program or if you cannot alter the functionality then they are called fixed function hardware.

The advantage fixed function hardware, they are smaller in die size.

Take a processor, they meant to be programmed so you can change the functioanlity of this processor by rewriting the program and these are not fixed function hardware
